Tokyo, Japan, July 7, 2022 –  Sport For Smile, the first-ever platform in Japan to harness the power of sport for social change, is pleased to announce that its newly launched initiative “Sport For Smile Planet League (SFSPL)” partners with the emission measurement service provider “e-dash” to encourage more sports organizations in Japan to take actions for climate change.

 

Through the partnership SFSPL will be providing its selected members (pro sports clubs and Olympic sports organizations mainly) with free access to the emission measurement services by e-dash for one year. The selection will be made based on the level and quality of social responsibility activities by each applicant organization with priority on signatories of UNFCCC’s Sports for Climate Action Framework (S4CA).

 

As a strategic partner of SFSPL, e-dash will provide its emission measurement online services for free for the selected 15 SFSPL members for one year. In addition, regular meetings will be held to improve the quality of services and to encourage communication between SFSPL members in order to collectively and effectively tackle on climate change harnessing the power of sport.

The application process and selection criteria of the free-account sports organizations will be detailed during the SFSPL seminar on July 14, where the procedures to join “Race to Zero” will be explained, followed by the panel by current S4CA signatories including New York Yankees and Nagoya Diamond Dolphins (to be held mainly for Japanese sports organizations).

 

About Sport for Climate Action Framework (S4CA):

  • Launched in December 2018 at the COP 24 as a framework for global sports organizations to collectively tackle on climate change, being led by the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) and the IOC (the International Olympic Committee).
  • The two new standards were established at the COP 26 in 2021 that require all the high-ambition track signatories, which automatically join “Race to Zero,” to halve their emissions by 2030 and to achieve net zero by 2040.
  • More than 280 sports organizations in the world became signatories before COP26
